January 21, 2011

I hope to learn a lot about supporting diverse learners in my classroom through the use of literacy skills.  I feel like without having literacy skills children are unable to move forward in other areas of the classroom so it is very important to take away as much information from this course as possible.

I hope to be teaching in a suburban environment and community, yet I understand with today's economy I may not be able to be picky about a job.  With this said I hope to learn about all communities especially urban, because I feel there will be a lot of job openings in urban areas in the near future.  I also hope to gain a lot of resources and ideas from this course to help me next year.

In this course I hope to..
  1. Become a learner (Know where to find resources/text to help my students)
  2. Gain competence & skills in how to teach literacy to all learners
  3. Understand how to communicate with families/communities about their child's learning if they too are illiterate

  1. I want to first off state that everything that you have stated, I agree with. I also strongly agree about the importance of literacy and this course, because literacy is EVERYWHERE. With having a baby who just turned 6 months (when he starts to retain infomation) so I have been making a concious effort to read to him every night. I feel like the importance of doing this will be beneficial. I think Carter will be more prepared for preschool/kindergarten and his willingness and enjoyment for school will be greater than babies/toddler who do not have any experience with text.
With this being an urban section, I think that what we learn will be beneficial but I also think that what we learn will be helpful in all schooling areas. In this course I hope to be able to learn more skills and teaching strageties for students who may be lower literacy level or illiterate children.

  2. I also agree greatly with you Kelly! Literacy really is integrated with every subject, so it is really important to support literacy learners in the classroom. I enjoyed all the literacy work we did in TE 301, so I am looking forward to continuing that work in this course as well.
As with any job, you have to start somewhere, so I am preparing myself for an urban school since I understand that is most likely where the majority of the available jobs will be. I think learning how to not only teach literacy but in an urban setting will ease my mind with understanding the environment I am teaching in, that the students are learning in, and how to use the world around as a learning tool. For example, I remember from TE 301 how my instructor noticed her kids first "reading" when they would go to Target and her young daughter would match the sign with the name of the store. This is a great use of literacy in the world around us, especially for an urban setting where books may not be as prevalent as everyday opportunities for learning. Through this course, I hope to further my understanding on strategies and preparation for teaching literacy learners. I also hope to, like Kelly said, build a relationship in the classroom with parents and students and how they interact with literacy.
